Putti were among the most popular companions to both religious and secular art into the 19th century. Thus after the great success of Franz Anton Bustelli’s “Putti as Ovidian Gods”, around 1765 the Manufactory decided to add a group of musical boys to the Children series. This serious-looking boy with the large drum is part of that group. Despite the severe expression, the slightly curving figure with its seemingly fluttering loincloth gives a very dynamic impression. With great concentration, the young musician, with his instrument strapped securely in front of him, is preparing to play with a drumstick and brush.
