Chinese Gardener
Chinese Gardener
This female gardener, measuring 18.5 centimetres, is wonderful proof that the Rococo Chinoiserie figures were not designed to be realistic portrayals of Far Eastern people. Instead, Franz Anton Bustelli was enchanted by shimmering exotic silk, varnish and mother of pearl. This is evidenced by the purple-red flowers on the lady’s petticoat, the meticulously painted collar and angled pagoda sleeves – calling to mind the inspirational high culture.
