Most of the figures in Franz Anton Bustelli’s Chinese cycle are made as pairs. Including this intricately designed Chinese Woman with Pineapple. Her counterpart is the Chinese Man with Teacup, who is lounging just as lasciviously as she, on a rocaille base with flowers. Yet how will the two come together, when their bodies shy away from each other with such coquettish contrariness? The lady is attempting to allure her gallant with a fabulous fruit, while he looks to conversation. Complex groups of figures such as this can be composed of 100 or more individual parts, which have to be assembled and retouched. Details such as the pineapple or pearls around the lady’s neck are individually formed freehand.
