This man with the distinctive moustache and wide floral trousers is one of the most beautiful, and also complex, figurines that Franz Anton Bustelli designed for the royal Manufactory in 1756. Painting the floral pattern on the sleeves and trouser legs alone requires a great deal of time in the master workshops, as does moulding the teacup and golden buttons on the exotic figure’s short-sleeved tunic, all of it done exclusively by hand. It goes without saying that such an impressive figure does not remain without company for long: That same year, Bustelli created an accompanying figure that was no less attractive, namely, the Chinese Woman with Pineapple. Together, they make an attractive pair, like most of the famous porcelain sculptor’s Chinoiserie figurines.
