A unique ensemble dedicated to the chinoiserie style was created in Munich around 1757: Franz Anton Bustelli’s “Chinese in the Temple”. The individual characters court, with their many expressive gestures and looks, the Bonze’s favour. This young Chinese man has inclined his head and raised his right hand to his forehead in humble greeting. His cheeks have a slight reddish tinge. His counterpart is a priest in a richly decorated robe, who has his left hand raised to bless the reverent young man.
