Porcelain with painted underglaze
As one of Nymphenburg’s most successful animal model makers, August Göhring spent many hours at Munich’s Hellabrunn Zoo. He was particularly fascinated by the elephants, whose vitality he captured in numerous sketches and studies. This produced such charming figures as this ten centimetre high baby elephant. The delicately nuanced shades of the underglazing, applied by hand, imbue the diminutive pachyderm with such faithfulness to nature that this figure still enjoys immense popularity even after 70 years.
