Porcelain with painted underglaze
The signs of an elephant’s eventful existence can be seen primarily in the condition of its skin. An almost ideal subject for depiction in porcelain, as very few materials are better suited to depicting animal hide than fine ceramic. Every wrinkle, every shade, every blemish and every hair – no matter how fine – of this majestic creation by August Göhring can be rendered by the underglaze applied by hand. The end result is revealed after the final firing at 1,400 degrees Celsius – and is one to be proud of.
