Corine (Coralina) as dressed by Igor Chapurin is the most enigmatic of the Commedia dell’Arte – Couture Edition figures. The colouring is dominated by tones of dark brown and platinum, the corporate colours of the Russian couture house. With this design, Igor Chapurin reveals a sense of subtle drama. Only in bright light can you discern the filigree pattern on the marbled, apparently monochrome colouring of the figurine. It is lacework whose outlines are applied in deep black on the dark background.
Contrary to intuitive assumptions, painting this figure was a relatively complicated business, mainly because the black pattern can be applied only at a second stage, once the dark brown has dried. Distinguishing the pattern from the irregularly structured ground was scarcely possible, so the painters had to apply it to some extent “blind.”
Chapurin’s fine all-over scheme reflects the inwardness he gives the Commedia dell’Arte character. What is going on in the maid’s mind as she reads her letter is as much a riddle to the viewer as the almost invisible ornamental pattern we can barely make out. Not even her face divulges her secrets. All we see in the platinum coating is the external world, not the maid’s inner world.
Individual figures are only available with Limit No. 16 – 25. It is not possible to order specific numbers. The figures will be supplied with a certificate in a gift box specially designed for the collection.
