Pierrot is one of the stock figures of Commedia dell’Arte. Generally he features in a simple monochrome white outfit. A melancholy man, he is usually shown as an other-worldly, sleep-walking figure of the night carrying a lantern.
In his design for the Commedia dell’Arte – Couture Edition figure of Pierrot, Franck Sorbier turned for inspiration to a well-known 18th-century French folk song, Au Clair de la Lune. In this lullaby, a friend asks Pierrot for a light and a quill so that he can record his thoughts on paper in the depth of night. Sorbier transfers the lullaby to Pierrot’s clothes in graphic form – the clef and notes represent simple melodies, while stars and round, moon-like shapes stand for the luminaries of the firmament of which the poets sing. The traditional basic white is also retained in this design. A background of smaller black dots, in part set in muted haloes of pastel tones, provide a carpet of distant stars unifying the design.
This jolly (pyjama) outfit has become a screen on which childhood fantasies can be projected. Melody and lyric merge as in the mental images of someone falling asleep. In this design, Pierrot, his story, and his reception fuse into one.
Individual figures are only available with Limit No. 16 – 25. It is not possible to order specific numbers. The figures will be supplied with a certificate in a gift box specially designed for the collection.
